How Can I Buy a Chinchilla Cage That Is Easy To Clean?

To make your life easier look to buy a Chinchilla cage that has a pull-out bottom tray which makes for easy and speedier cleaning.  Otherwise you will need to put plenty of Chinchilla bedding down to soak up the urine and waste that your Chinchilla produces. Chinchillas are not like cats, they will not be trained to go on a litter tray but they do tend to repeatedly urinate in the same area so at least once you know where you can place more bedding down in that area. Tip – placing baking soda in that area reduces any nasty odors and smells.

How Often Should I Clean My Chinchilla Cage?

With a pull out tray Chinchilla cages can be cleaned approximately once a week.  Chinchilla cages with solid floors will need cleaning out every two-three days if not more frequently. Keeping your Chinchilla’s surroundings clean helps guard against possible infections.  As an owner of a pet Chinchilla you must accept responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness of your Chinchillas cages in order to keep your pet healthy and happy. It is unavoidable but germs and bacteria are bound to develop in a Chinchillas cages which is not being cleaned frequently.

Do not let your Chinchilla develop health problems as a result of your laziness. Be sure to wash his food and water dish regularly and when feeding him be sure to wash your hands when handling your Chinchilla’s food because your hands can carry bacteria that we are immune to but that can be deadly to a Chinchilla.

Inspect your Chinchilla cage daily and change it’s litter/bedding. Once a month take your Chinchilla out and thoroughly scrub, disinfect and clean the inside of the cage for maximum health benefits to your pet Chinchilla.

Chinchilla Cage Cleaning Tip 1 - Your Chinchilla tends to urinate in the same spot in its cage so you can easily just change this area by placing more bedding/litter down without having to change or clean the entire cage out. However your Chinchilla will pass solid food waste (feces) all over the cage so we recommend to remove these daily.

Chinchilla Cage Cleaning Tip 2 – Your Chinchilla’s food bowl is the Chinchilla cage accessory most likely to get infected and contaminated with germs and bacteria. Sometimes feces will end up in the food and water bowl. On a daily basis we recommend cleaning the food bowl and water bowl under hot water.

Chinchilla Cage Cleaning Tip 3 – Once a week we recommend changing ALL your Chinchillas bedding as over time urine and feces gather in the bedding and soon the cage will start to smell.

Chinchilla Cage Cleaning Tip 4 – The Chinchilla’s water bottle and tubing is an area especially vulnerable to mildew, mould or bacteria. We suggest on a weekly basis you clean the bottle and tube.

Chinchilla Cage Cleaning Tip 5 – When using chemicals and detergents be careful to rinse afterwards with hot water to thoroughly rinse away any chemical residues that may remain in any part of the Chinchilla cage. Many household cleaners have dangerous chemicals which could be poisonous to your pet Chinchilla.

Chinchilla Cage Cleaning Tip 6 - If you use bleach to disinfect your Chinchilla cage dilute it with water – 5% bleach and 95% water makes an ideal cleaning solution.

Not only is cleaning and maintenance vital to your Chinchilla’s health it also will save you money by making the Chinchilla cages last much longer.
