What Is a Chinchilla Dust Bath?

A Chinchilla dust bath is something you must give your Chinchilla; it is simply a way for your Chinchilla to clean itself, instead of water, your Chinchilla needs to bathe in dust (or sand). So get your Chinchilla out of its Chinchilla cage and give it a treat, it loves a dust bath and you will also have great fun watching your Chinchilla wriggle around in its bath. The dust bath is natural for your Chinchilla because they do this in the wild using volcanic ash. What happens is that the volcanic ash gets into their fur and collects dead skin, oils and dirt which they then can shake off.

By the way, if there is any other Chinchilla related words or expressions you do not understand you may want to look at our Chinchilla glossary which is a list of Chinchilla related words together with their definitions and explanation.

How Often Should I Give My Chinchilla a Dust Bath?

This is a very good question because most new Chinchilla owners do not even know they have to look after and maintain their Chinchilla by giving them the dust bath. There is no right or wrong answer to how often a dust bath is necessary but surely you can give your Chinchilla a dust bath two to three times a week. If you clean your Chinchilla more frequently you may find you dry their skin too much. Chinchilla dust bath gives them a chance to get out their cage for Chinchilla and have a treat in new surroundings. Chinchillas love dust baths!

Can I Clean My Chinchilla in Water?

No! Do not wash your pet Chinchilla in water as although they will not be harmed, presuming you don’t submerge them, it will remove their natural oils which are necessary for the health and well-being of their splendid skin and fur coat. The Chinchilla’s natural oils also regulate its body temperature which we know must not go much above 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

How Do I Give My Chinchilla a Dust Bath?

To give your Chinchilla a dust bath get a large glass bowl and fill the bottom with approximately an inch of Chinchilla dust. We recommend taking your Chinchilla out of its cage but you could put the bowl in the cage if you prefer. The dust can be re-used but once it starts to look lumpy and dirty do change it. If you do put the dust bath into the Chinchilla cage do take it out afterwards as otherwise your Chinchilla will likely use it too much and it might also use it as a litter-tray.  Fifteen to twenty minutes is usually sufficient time for your Chinchilla to clean and wash itself.

Where Do I Buy Chinchilla Dust?

Most pet stores and pet shops will sell a special Chinchilla dust for bathing. Alternatively we point you to online website sources where you can buy the dust in case you don’t have a pet store close to you that stocks Chinchilla dust. You can also use Chinchilla sand or Chinchilla powders but the Chinchilla dust is best as it is especially designed to be as close to the natural ash that the Chinchilla loves. See Chinchilla cage accessories
